What is the one electronic device that has changed your life the most? Has it been a blessing or a curse?
Submitted by Aubrey.
Definitely a PDA/Phone - I started using a Blackberry in 2001 when I helped launch Earthlink's campaign for RIM (they were giving away a free Blackberry with a year contract). I've never really gone back to a true phone since, with the exception of a year with the RAZR. The iPhone is the newest incarnation of this, and I think it's been both a blessing AND a curse since I find myself tied to it more than I would like. In fact, I often have to purposefully put it away or leave it in the other room (or in my purse) to ensure I'm not being distracted by email or text messages. I thought it would be better since I'm not working and don't HAVE to check my email for any reason, but I haven't seen much of a difference. Being connected surely has its benefits, but I think we're also sacrificing a lot - namely, appreciating human interaction - for it.
What do you do with the cards and letters you receive? Do you keep them all, just keep the photos, throw them away?
Inspired by jacolily.
I tend to keep the Holiday cards (if only to remind myself that yes, I really *AM* the last living singleton on earth) as well as anything really meaningful. I have all of the letters that my Grandfather wrote me in college, and at one point I realized that my relatives were getting older and I wanted to make sure I told them how much they meant to me. So I wrote them each a personal letter reminiscing about some memories and times together, and - amazingly, beautifully - they wrote me back. I have all of those as well.
I also have notes from 7th grade...some of them are too funny to throw away. Like this one.
How are you celebrating Halloween today?
I think this is the first year EVER that I haven't dressed up. Just broke a 29-year streak. In lieu, I'm dressing Lila Belle up as a ladybug. Because I CAN.
What are your predictions for the World Series?
I predict that I will NOT be watching. Boo.
What's your favorite appetizer to order at a restaurant?
Caviar and blinis.
What? I have good taste.
Led Zeppelin will finally offer their music online starting next month. Of the music you buy, about how much of it do you download and how much do you buy on physical formats (CDs, vinyl, etc.)?
I'd say I'm about 30:1 digital/physical. I just don't have the space for CDs, nor the desire to go into a music store. Yep, I know that Amazon delivers (as does every other site, I suppose) but iTunes and eMusic are just too easy not to stick to online. (I *DO* need to try the new amazon music delivery as well.)
What sources do you count on for national news coverage? How about international and local news?
"The Today Show". Pathetic, I know, but that's about what I can muster on a daily basis, since, you know, my day is so full of other things that keep me away from the news. Like Twitter. And adding former miscreants-now-lawyers on LinkedIn. You know. The important things.
What fictional creature do you wish were real?
The BFG (by Roald Dahl), duh.
What makes your best friend so special?
Submitted by Jessmiloo.
Um, because *I* am *THEIR* best friend.
Duh.
Do you own all the albums of any particular musical artist or group? Who?
Submitted by dutterman.
Ryan Adams. Everything from Whiskeytown to his latest miraculous melodious piece of awesomeness, Easy Tiger.
Also, in no particular order:
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Counting Crows
Angels and Airwaves (um, yeah. They only have one album, but whatev. I embarrassingly enough like it, even if it does remind me of all of the stress of last summer and makes me need a xanax each time I listen to it).
Sufjan Stevens
Stars
I could go on, but this was supposed to be a quick post.
